Working with ABcubed

2 questions
How do I start a project with ABcubed Architects?

At ABcubed, every project begins with a conversation. You share your goals, site and budget range, and the team works through four stages with you:

  1. Discovery & Brief
  2. Concept & Vision
  3. Design Development
  4. Construction & Delivery

You don't need drawings or a finished brief to get in touch. Defining the project is part of what ABcubed does.

What should I prepare before my first meeting with ABcubed?

Bring your goals, a rough budget range, any site documents you have (such as a lot plan, title or survey) and pictures of spaces you like. That's enough. In the Discovery & Brief stage, ABcubed turns this into a clear program of the spaces you need and how they should work together.

Planning & design

3 questions
What is pre-design, and how does ABcubed Architects approach it?

Pre-design checks that a project is feasible before you pay for full design. ABcubed's pre-design covers:

  • site selection and environmental analysis
  • community engagement
  • feasibility and zoning review
  • programming
  • a preliminary cost analysis

ABcubed puts this work first because a problem found at this stage costs almost nothing to fix. The same problem found during construction can cost a great deal.

What happens during schematic design at ABcubed?

Schematic design turns your brief into building concepts. ABcubed studies several layouts using 3D modeling, designs around sun orientation and how people move through the spaces, and presents site plans, floor plans, renderings and preliminary cost estimates. You review the options, give feedback, and approve one direction. For the M.A. Residence, this stage produced a home where three generations share a building without giving up privacy.

How many design options does ABcubed Architects present?

ABcubed presents several options during schematic design, each with 3D renderings, so you compare real alternatives before choosing. The design is refined through review rounds until you formally approve a direction.

Interiors

2 questions
Does ABcubed Architects design interiors as well as buildings?

Yes. ABcubed's architectural interiors service covers space planning, selection of finishes (favoring sustainable materials), and coordination of lighting, plumbing fixtures and custom millwork. ABcubed designs interiors and architecture together, so the inside of the building carries the same design intent as the outside.

Why does ABcubed design interiors at the same time as the architecture?

Interior decisions affect walls, ceilings, lighting positions, plumbing and sometimes structure. When interiors are added late, those parts get reworked at extra cost. ABcubed plans the interiors alongside the building, which avoids that rework and produces spaces that feel like one complete design.

Documents, permits & construction

3 questions
What are construction documents, and what does ABcubed include in them?

Construction documents are the drawings and specifications contractors bid on and build from. ABcubed's set includes complete plans, sections and elevations plus detailed specifications for materials and building methods. Because the documents are this precise, contractors' bids can be compared and the finished building matches the design.

Does ABcubed Architects handle building permits?

Yes. ABcubed prepares the drawings and documentation authorities require, helps obtain building permits and other approvals, and checks that every design meets the applicable building codes and zoning rules.

What is an RFI, and how does ABcubed handle them?

An RFI (request for information) is a contractor's formal question when the drawings need clarifying or site conditions turn out different from what was expected. ABcubed answers RFIs promptly and in writing. That keeps construction moving and leaves a record of every design decision.
